About Shakopee

Shakopee is a wonderful place to raise a family. It is a diverse community with excellent schools, abundant recreational opportunities, good restaurants, top-notch medical care and the friendliness of a small town.

History

The first village on the contemporary Shakopee was established by Chief Shakopee of the Mdewakanton Dakota in 17th century.  Shakopee band lived following the changes of the season with cornfields planted. By the end of 18th century the Ojibwa nation began pushing into Dakota territory and in the middle of 19th century the permanent Shakopee village was acting as a boundary to the Ojibwa.

In 1851 Thomas A. Holmes established a trading post and Shakopee boomed as a commerce exchange site between  river and rail at Murphy’s Landing leading a life of  isolated city in the Minnesota River Valley.

By 1960 the metropolitan area expanded and Shakopee transformed into Twin Cities’ suburb.

Shakopee Public Schools

The Shakopee district serves more than 8,000 students in Shakopee, Savage, Prior Lake, and the Jackson, Louisville, and Sand Creek Townships. The district is located in one of the fastest growing suburbs in the Twin Cities.
