In 1852 the first land that would become Brooklyn Park was claimed. The first residents to stake claims were; Washington Getchell and his son Winslow (in the southern part of the city), Ezra Hanscom who took claims near the Getchells and Pierre Bottineau and others took claim of land in what is now Maple Grove and Osseo. In 1853, settlers from Michigan moved into the area and gave it the name Brooklyn Township after their home in Brooklyn, Michigan. In the 1860s Brooklyn Park was split into Brooklyn Park and Crystal Lake in the north and Brooklyn Center to the south.
Brooklyn Park lies on the west side of the Mississippi River north of Minneapolis. Brooklyn Park is the sixth largest city in Minnesota. Brooklyn Park contains Edinburgh USA Golf Course and Target Corporation is expanding their Northern Campus. The campus will be a 26,600-job provider at the cost of $1.78 billion.

ISD 279 is the fifth-largest school district in the state, serving all or parts of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Corcoran, Dayton, Maple Grove, Osseo, Plymouth, and Rogers.
The district serves approximately 20,000 students, pre-kindergarten through grade 12, in 17 elementary schools (PreK-5), four middle schools (6-8), three senior highs (9-12), an area learning center, two early childhood centers, two special program sites, and an adult education/enrollment center.
Community education classes serve lifelong learners from birth through senior citizens.
